Council - Where are we? |
Kirkbampton
is a small parish situated in the far North West of Cumbria
in North West England.
The area encompasses the villages of Kirkbampton, Little Bampton,
Oughterby, Studholm and Ploughlands, as well as having close
links with Thurstonfield which is in the adjoining Parish of
Burgh by Sands. Kirkbampton Parish is officially under Allerdale
District Council control but it is over 60km to Workington (the
administrative centre) and the Eastern Boundary of the Parish
is also the boundary between Allerdale and Carlisle City. In
this respect, socially, the village has more of an affinity
to Carlisle than it has to Allerdale.
If you live or work within the area outlined in blue below,
then Kirkbampton Parish Council is your first point of contact
for any problems you may have. |
|
The
largest of the villages is Kirkbampton itself and is laid out
in a linear form along the B5307 being the main route between
Carlisle and Kirkbride and onwards to Wigton and West Cumbria.
There are two small modern estates of Oaks Lane and Solway View
off this linear route. Kirkbampton School (Infants and Primary)
lies on the Eastern boundary of the village alongside the new
Village Hall built in 2001 with a National Lottery grant..
The small Saint Peter's Church is a Grade one listed building
and is sited in the centre of the village |

The community
used to vote at Aitkon but in July 1895 a Polling Station in
Kirkbampton was requested.
There was no business done in June & November 1898 due to
lack of attendance.
At many early meetings the only business was reading of the
Minutes of the previous meeting.
In March 1932 problems with gypsies were noted in the Minutes
and the County Council was requested to fence in the area.
February 1938, Disaster, the accounts were overdrawn by £1
6s 8d (Roughly £1.33p)
For many years elections appear to have been held every year
and the nomination papers were just given to the Chairman who
checked them to see if they were all in order. Only 1 election
has been held in the 112 year history of the Council and that
was in 1997.
The Parish Council used to nominate the District Councillor. |
