| Parish
Council - Highway Stewards |
| Cumbria
Highways, the partnership between Cumbria County Council, Amey
and Capita Symonds, now employs Highway Stewards to provide
a service which will be highly responsive to local needs in
rural areas. A number of Highway Stewards have been appointed
throughout the County, each responsible for a local ‘patch’
or grouping of parishes within a ‘Local Area Partnership’
(LAP) area. The Stewards are equipped with tools and a van and
will be trained to deal with many day-to-day jobs such as clearing
blocked gullies and digging drainage channels, cleaning, repairing
and replacing signs, weeding and cutting back overhanging vegetation
and doing some road surface repair work. They find and fix many
kinds of highways problems in their areas, are able to call
in extra resources for bigger jobs and help inspectors and engineers
identify areas where major works might be needed.
The Highways Stewards ideally live close to the communities
they serve, and build working relationships with their parishes,
councillors and other key figures in the area. In this way,
they benefit from a wealth of local knowledge that helps them
to keep on top of the small but important jobs that often make
the most difference to local people. |
Our Highway Steward
will be in this area on the following dates:
Week Commencing:
February 8th, April 19th,June 21st,August 30th & November

The
Highways Hotline and the Operational Control Room are key
elements in the way the County Council organise themselves
to respond to the public and manage and maintain Cumbria’s
roads.
In fact, the hotline is the route by which most members of
the public contact us about the highways issues that they
care about. There are several ways that anyone can report
a problem from a faulty street light to a fallen tree –
online, by email, or even by fax - but the vast majority if
enquiries come through the Highways Hotline.
The hotline is open for business 24 hours a day, 365 days
a year on

Parish Council also keep a record of the faults that they report
together wth the reference number so that a check can be kept
on how the work is proceeding.
If you report a fault to the Highways Hotline we would appreciate
it if you would inform us of the reference number so we can
track the works and if necessary chase up the problem. |
